Your home for all things fire pit

| Category: garden fire pit | Tags: ,,,,,,

We have a ridiculous amount of cardboard and paper leftover from the holidays. My city doesn’t recycle, so I was going to take it all to my dad’s fire pit. But there are several large bags of cardboard boxes, tissue paper, wrapping paper etc. It seems like it would be easier to just burn it myself, but my husband got rid of the outdoor fireplace last year and the only clear area I can burn it is where the garden belongs. Will burning this stuff over where the garden is be in anyway harmful to the soil for growing vegetables this summer?

We live in Ohio, people here put lime on their grass to make it greener… whatever that means for the kind of soil we have :-)

Most people who burn their waste do not realize how harmful this practice is to their health and to the environment. Current research indicates that backyard burning is far more harmful to our health than previously thought. It can increase the risk of heart disease, aggravate respiratory ailments such as asthma and emphysema, and cause rashes, nausea, or headaches. Backyard burning also produce harmful quantities of dioxins, a group of highly toxic chemicals that settle on crops and in our waterways where they eventually wind up in our food and affect our health.

is there anyway you can obtain reasonably priced waste collection service? or take your waste to a drop-off center as alternatives to backyard burning.

If you ‘do’ backyard burning, you should do it burn barrel, homemade burn box, wood stove, outdoor boiler, or open pit. It will harm your land and it will harm your health. I don’t approve of it.

use google as your source for finding places to take your trash away.

Most ink these days is soybean based and pretty inocuos when burned. Stay away from shiny prinit, it does have a few toxins. Burning paper and cardboard is no more harmful than burning wood in your fireplace. And it is good for your garden. RSctt

Burning the paper and cardboard will scorch the soil beneath, even if it is frozen. It may not do permanent damage, especially if you turn the soil and mix in compost before you plant. But why not make use of that paper and cardboard instead? You could shred it and use it in a compost pile as “browns”, or as mulch in your garden beds. Large boxes can be used as the bottom level of a lasagna bed.
